Kumar Sanu: The Biography of a Legend
Kumar Sanu was born as Kedarnath Bhattacharya on 20 October 1957 in Kolkata, West Bengal. He belonged to a musical family, as his father Pashupati Bhattacharya was a vocalist and composer. He trained Sanu as a singer and tabla player from a young age. Sanu was also influenced by the legendary singer Kishore Kumar, whom he considered as his idol and mentor.
Sanu started his career as a singer and musician in Kolkata, where he performed in clubs and stage shows. He also sang for some Bengali films and albums. In 1986, he got his first break in the Bangladeshi film Teen Kanya, directed by Shibli Sadiq. In 1987, he moved to Mumbai to pursue his dream of becoming a playback singer in Bollywood. He got his first opportunity from Jagjit Singh, who introduced him to Kalyanji-Anandji. They suggested him to change his name from Sanu Bhattacharya to Kumar Sanu, after Kishore Kumar.
Sanu's career took off in 1990, when he sang for the blockbuster film Aashiqui, composed by Nadeem-Shravan. He sang all but one song in the film, and became an overnight sensation. He won his first Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the song Ab Tere Bin. He went on to win four more consecutive Filmfare Awards for the songs Mera Dil Bhi Kitna Pagal Hai (Saajan), Sochenge Tumhe Pyar (Deewana), Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen (Baazigar) and Ek Ladki Ko Dekha (1942: A Love Story). He created a Guinness World Record for recording 28 songs in a single day in 1993.
Sanu worked with some of the best music directors and composers of Bollywood, such as Anu Malik, Jatin-Lalit, Anand-Milind, Rajesh Roshan, Nadeem-Shravan, Himesh Reshammiya and others. He also sang with some of the finest female singers, such as Alka Yagnik, Sadhana Sargam, Anuradha Paudwal, Kavita Krishnamurthy and others. He lent his voice to some of the biggest stars of Bollywood, such as Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn and others. He sang for more than 1000 films and 20,000 songs in various languages and genres.
Sanu also ventured into music direction and production. He composed music for some films and albums, such as Utthaan, Dhund - The Fog, Hum Tum Dushman Dushman and others. He also launched his own music label called My Fun Music in 2019. He also tried his hand at politics and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2004.
Sanu has received many awards and honors for his contribution to Indian music and cinema. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2009 by the Government of India. He also received the Doctor of Literature degree from The American College of Dubai in 2017.
