Lucky Dube Biography: A Brief Overview
Lucky Philip Dube was born on August 3, 1964, in Ermelo, South Africa. He grew up in poverty and started singing at a young age to support his family. He joined his cousin's band, The Love Brothers, when he was 18 and recorded his first album, Lengane Ngeyethu, in 1981. The album was a success and launched his career as a mbaqanga singer.
In 1984, Lucky Dube decided to switch to reggae music after being inspired by Peter Tosh and Bob Marley. He released his first reggae album, Rastas Never Die, in 1985. The album was banned by the apartheid government for its political messages. However, this did not stop Lucky Dube from continuing to make reggae music that spoke out against oppression, injustice, and racism.
Lucky Dube became an international star in the late 1980s and early 1990s with albums such as Slave, Together As One, Victims, and Trinity.
