Jahan e Danish: The Autobiography of a Renowned Urdu Poet
Jahan e Danish (Ø¬ÛØ§Ù Ø¯Ø§ÙØ´) is a book by Ehsan Danish (Ø§ØØ³Ø§Ù Ø¯Ø§ÙØ´), a famous Urdu poet, writer and scholar from Pakistan. The book is his autobiography, in which he narrates his life story, his struggles, his achievements and his insights into poetry and literature. Ehsan Danish was born as Ehsan-ul-Haq (Ø§ØØ³Ø§Ù Ø§ÙØÙ) on 2 February 1914 in Kandhla, a town in Uttar Pradesh, India. He belonged to a poor family and had to work as a laborer since his childhood. He had little formal education and learned Urdu, Persian and Arabic by himself. He started writing poetry at a young age and adopted the pen name of Danish (Ø¯Ø§ÙØ´), meaning knowledge or wisdom. He was influenced by the works of Mirza Ghalib, Allama Iqbal and Josh Malihabadi.
He migrated to Pakistan after the partition of India in 1947 and settled in Lahore. He worked as a journalist, editor, teacher and researcher. He wrote over 100 books on poetry, prose, linguistics, lexicography and prosody. He also compiled several dictionaries of Urdu and Persian words. He was awarded the Pride of Performance by the Government of Pakistan in 1969 and the Sitara-e-Imtiaz in 1978 for his contributions to Urdu literature. He died on 22 March 1982 in Lahore.
